Heart of the Gulf: Coccolithophore - Framed Original Painting
This coccolithophore, Emiliania huxleyi, is a single-celled phytoplankton found in almost every ocean on earth, and is covered with ornate calcite discs called coccoliths.
This painting is inspired by my time working in a phytoplankton lab, looking at these unbelievably beautiful organisms under magnification. We don’t appreciate all they do for our planet, and the important role they play here in the Gulf of Maine. 50% of all the oxygen we breathe is produced by phytoplankton. As the ocean warms and acidifies, these particular phytoplankton are at risk.
If you look closely, the background of this painting is inspired by a topographic map of the Gulf of Maine, from Nova Scotia, to Cape Cod and Georges Bank.
